Need more power? Want lower gearing, in the tranny? Want to swap from auto to stick shift, or vise versa? Consider a Drive Train Swap.
Why waste time and money on those performance parts for your under powered 4 banger? True not everyone needs high horse power for their rig. Yes if all you do is rock crawling, you really don't need 200 h.p. But sometimes you just need it, or at least just want more power. Sure you can more h.p. out of any engine. But at what cost? A lot of times the cost of building h.p. will be about the same as swapping out the entire drive line.
What are some considerations for a engine or drive line swap?
- Have a plan before you go for it!
- Will the rest of the rig handle the added power, or weight?
- Will the parts I want bolt up to each other?
- What will I gain?
- How much will it cost?
- What am I going to use the Rig for?
- What about EFI?
The first thing you must do is come up with a plan. This will save you A lot of money and time. Don't jump right in and try to use something that will not work with anything else. ie; don't try and use a VW engine with a Hudaka tranny. I try to keep things that bolt together. ie; I shoot for using GM parts with GM parts, or Ford with Ford. This will greatly reduce the cost of a swap. This is mainly because you will not have to buy adapters. They are expensive! Also I try to keep things with a good parts availability. This keeps the cost of future repairs down.
Again price will vary on what you want, everyone is different.
The swap that I mainly use is EFI 302s. I like this setup very much. They are abundant, run forever, and if you want power you can get it.
